Rules overview
Tic-Tac-Toe with teeth. Play cards, win tricks, and battle for control of the grid. This classic schoolyard game is turned on its head as you outwit your opponent across multiple rounds to see who is the true Trick Tac Foe!
- Players: 2
- Ages: 8+
- Time: 15–20 minutes
Components
- 1 standard 52-card deck, no Jokers
- 9 double-sided numbered tokens labeled 1 to 9, each shows Heads on one side and Tails on the other
- 3x3 grid numbered 1 to 9, a paper grid is sufficient
- 2 player aids, optional
Setup
- Build the base deck: remove K through 10 of Hearts and Clubs. Keep all other cards.
- Shuffle the deck.
- Deal 3 cards to each player. Place the rest as a face-down draw pile. Create a face-up discard pile space.
- Put the nine numbered tokens in a supply near the grid.
- Assign sides: one player is Heads, the other is Tails.
- Choose a starting leader by coin flip. Alternate the starting leader each new round.
Objective
- Round: after a trick fully resolves, if exactly one player shows any 3 in a row of their side, that player wins the round. If both show a 3 in a row at that time, the round is a tie. If the deck and both hands are empty with no 3 in a row, the round is a tie.
- Match: best of 3 or best of 5 rounds.
Core Concepts and Terms
- Trick: both players reveal one card from hand.
- Lead: the player who selects and reveals first.
- Place: put a specific numbered token from the supply onto its matching grid space with your side up.
- Flip: turn a token on the grid to its opposite side.
- Remove: return a token from the grid to the supply.
- Fast numbers: the ranks 2 and 3, which resolve before determining the trick winner.
Turn Structure
- Reveal: both players reveal one card from hand.
- Fast resolution: resolve all 2s, then all 3s. Within each number, the leader resolves first, then the other player.
- Determine winner: compare ranks using the Rank Order. If equal, the trick has no winner.
- Winner effect: if there is a winner, that player resolves their card’s effect.
- Discard: move both revealed cards to the discard pile.
- Zero-hand refresh: if any player now has zero cards in hand, both players immediately discard any remaining cards in hand, then both draw up to 3 cards from the deck. If the deck empties, each draws as many as possible.
- Round check: evaluate the grid. If exactly one player shows any 3 in a row, that player wins the round. If both show a 3 in a row, the round is a tie. Otherwise continue.
- Next lead: winner leads the next trick. On a tied trick, the non-leader becomes the new leader.
Actions
Rank Order
Ranks run King highest down to 2. Ace has value 11. Order: K, J, Q, A, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. Suits are ignored.
Number Cards, Ace and 4 to 9
Ace targets space 1. There is exactly one token for each number 1 to 9.
- If the matching space is empty: place the matching numbered token from the supply onto that exact space with your side up. Example: win with 3, place the 3 token on space 3.
- If the matching space has its token: flip that token to the other side.
Fast Numbers, 2 and 3
These resolve when revealed, even if you later lose or tie the trick.
- 2: resolve the matching space for 2 as above. Leader’s 2 resolves before the other player’s 2.
- 3: resolve the matching space for 3 as above. Leader’s 3 resolves before the other player’s 3.
Face Cards
- 10, Single Flip: choose any one token on the grid and flip it.
- J, Wild Placement: place one token on any empty space with your side up.
- Q, Removal: remove any one token from the grid and return it to the supply.
- K, Card Surge: draw two cards from the deck into your hand.
Scoring
- Record each round as Win or Tie.
- Match ends when a player wins the required number of rounds in a best of 3 or best of 5.
End of Round or End of Game or Ties
- Tied trick: if both players revealed the same rank, only Fast numbers resolve. No winner effect resolves. Discard both cards. The non-leader becomes the new leader.
- End of round: clear all tokens from the grid and return them to the supply. Rebuild the base deck as in Setup, shuffle, and deal 3 cards to each player. Alternate the starting leader.
Examples
- Fast before winner
Leader reveals 3, opponent reveals Q. Resolve 3 on space 3. Compare ranks, Q beats 3. Winner resolves Q to remove any one token. Discard both cards. Winner leads next trick.
- Numbered token placement
You win with 7. Space 7 is empty. Place the 7 token on space 7 with your side up.
- Forced flip
You win with 5. Space 5 already shows your side. Flip it to your opponent’s side.
- Simultaneous 3 in a row
After all effects, both players show a 3 in a row. The round is a tie.
