Overview

A game made for the table.

Divide takes the classic trick-taking framework and injects a desperate, tactical choice into every round. When you win a trick, you don't just take the cards—you must immediately draft one of three rewards alongside the two players who finished right behind you: Points: Claim immediate scoring tokens, but at the cost of control. Trump Control: Declare or change the active Trump Rank, potentially crippling your opponent's planned strategy. Lead Control: Seize the initiative for the next trick, setting up powerful combos. Compounding the tension is the Strategic Token Track, where scoring values are hidden initially but slowly revealed over the nine tricks. Will you risk a low-point reward to secure Trump, hoping to position yourself for the hidden 5-point token about to be revealed?. Components

Components

  • 1 Standard 52-card deck (54 with Jokers for 6 players)
  • 9 Scoring Tokens (values 1, 1, 1, 1, 3, 3, 3, 5, 5)
  • Scorepad
  • Printable Token Track (optional)

Objective

Master the art of balancing power, profit, and information across four tense rounds to be the first player to reach 50 points

Setup (Per Round)

  1. Deal 9 cards to each player.
  2. Commit for Trick 1: Each player places 1 card face down to the center (Trick 1). This committed card is played with maximum initial hand knowledge, before the Divide Draft.
  3. Divide Draft: From the remaining 8 cards, pass 1 card left and 1 card right. Each player ends with 8 cards in hand.
  4. Flip and resolve the center cards as Trick 1 using normal trick-taking rules.
  5. Token Track: Shuffle the nine tokens face down into a line. Reveal the first and last tokens before Trick

Playing a Trick

The player with Lead Control from the previous trick (or the player who led Trick 1) leads the first card.

  1. Lead a card. Players must follow suit if able; otherwise play any card.
  2. Trump Hierarchy (When Active): The ranking of cards is determined by the active Trump Rank.
  • The highest card of the trick is any card that matches both the Lead Suit and the active Trump Rank.
  • If played out of suit, any card matching the active Trump Rank beats any card of the Lead Suit.
  • Jokers (6P only) beat non-trumps but lose to any trump.
  • Otherwise, the highest card of the Lead Suit wins.
  1. Rank order: Ace high to 2 low.
  2. Suit priority for breaking ties among trumps: Spades > Hearts > Diamonds > Clubs.

Resolving Each Trick: The Divide

After ranking cards (high to low within trump rules), the top three finishers draft rewards in order.

Placement and Choices

  • 1st - Choose any of the three available rewards.
  • 2nd - Choose from the remaining two rewards.
  • 3rd - Take the last remaining reward.

The available rewards are

  • A - Points: Take the current scoring token. (Exactly one token is claimed each trick.)
  • B - Trump: Declare or change the active Trump Rank (or declare “No Trump”). The Trump persists until changed.
  • C - Lead: Take Lead Control for the next trick.

Token Track Reveal: After each trick, reveal the next unrevealed token from each end of the line. By the start of Trick 5, all tokens are visible.

End of Round and Game

After all nine tricks

  1. Add the values of tokens collected by each player.
  2. Record round scores.
  3. Shuffle all cards and play the next round.
  4. Game ends after four rounds or when a player reaches 50 points.

Tiebreakers: Most 5-value tokens > Most tricks led > Shared win.

Glossary

  • Divide Draft: Pass 1 card left and 1 right before play.
  • Trump Rank: Chosen card rank (e.g., 7s) that beats all others in the trick hierarchy.
  • Suit Priority: Order for breaking ties among trumps (Spades > Hearts > Diamonds > Clubs).
  • Token Track: Line of nine scoring tokens revealed from both ends as the round progresses.
