Stack Gap

Overview

“Mind the gap, build the wall, and keep it from crumbling into rubble!” Players (solo or competitive) must strategically place cards to maximize the difference between numbers on the same levels to score points. The higher you build, the harder it gets. But beware—if you cannot place a card three times, your wall collapses into rubble.

Game Facts

  • Players: 1–2
  • Ages: 8+
  • Time: 20–30 minutes

Inside the Box

  • 52-card standard deck
  • 2 Jokers (optional)
  • Score tracker (paper, pencil, or app)

Setup

  1. Shuffle the deck.
  2. Deal 5 cards face-up in a line. This is Level 1 (L1), the foundation of the wall.
  3. Each player draws 3 cards.
  4. Place the remaining deck as the draw pile.

Objective

Build the tallest, highest-scoring wall by filling numeric gaps between cards. The wider the gap and the higher the level, the more points you earn.

Core Concepts and Terms

  • Gap: Two cards side by side on the same level. A valid placement must fall strictly between their values.
  • Example: Between 4 and 8, legal placements are 5, 6, or 7.
  • Gap Width: Count of numbers that can fit between the two cards. (4 → 8 has width 3.)
  • Level: Rows above the base. The foundation is Level 1, the next row Level 2, and so on.

Turn Structure

  1. Play or Discard:
  • If you can play: choose a valid card from your hand, place it in a gap at the next level above, and score points.
  • If no play is possible: discard 1 card to the Rubble Pile.
  1. Score: Gain points equal to Gap Width + Level Number.
  2. Draw: Refill your hand to 3 cards.

Rubble Rule

If a player discards 3 times (3 rubble cards), they lose immediately. In solo mode, the game ends.

Scoring

Placement: Score = Gap Width + Level Number

Jokers

  • Played as any missing number.
  • Score = 0 points.
  • Immediately declared as inheriting either the lower or upper value. That decision is permanent.
  • Keeps the wall open for further rows.

End of Game

  • Solo Mode
  • WIN - The game ends immediately if you place a card on the 5th level
  • LOSS - The game ends immediately if you discard your third card to rubble.
  • LOSS - The game ends when both the deck and your hand are empty.
  • Your final score is the sum of all points earned.
  • Two-Player Mode
  • The game ends immediately if a player places a card on the 5th level, that player wins
  • The game ends immediately if a player discards their third card to rubble. That player loses, and the other wins.
  • Otherwise, the game ends when both hands and the deck are empty.
  • The player with the higher score wins.

Examples

  • Gap 2 → 6 = width 3. Playing a 4 on Level 2 scores 3 + 2 = 5 points.
  • Gap 10 → King = width 2. Playing a Jack on Level 3 scores 2 + 3 = 5 points.
  • Joker placed between 5 → 9 inherits as 5 (or 9). On the next level, the gap can continue using Joker as one edge.

Questions and clarifications

Frequently asked questions

What rank is Ace?

A: Ace is always low (1). It does not wrap around to high.

How do Jokers work?

A: When played, a Joker must be immediately declared as either the low or high edge of the gap. It does not score points itself, but it keeps the gap open for the next row. Once declared, it cannot change later.

Can more than one card fill a gap on the same level?

A: No. Each gap supports only one card per row.

If a card fits in multiple gaps, do I have to choose a specific one?

A: You may choose freely between any legal gaps.

What happens if both players hit their third rubble discard in the same round?

A: The game ends immediately. The player with the higher score at that moment wins.

What happens if the deck runs out on the same turn a player hits rubble?

A: Rubble loss overrides deck depletion. That player loses immediately.

What if the starting foundation row has no gaps with space for a card?

A: Mulligan the row. Shuffle and deal a new foundation until at least two gaps have width ≥1.

When is the +5 row completion bonus scored (if using it)?

A: As soon as the last gap in a row is filled.

Do I reshuffle rubble into the deck when the draw pile is empty?

A: No. Rubble is permanent. It is a timer and a loss condition, not a discard.

How do card ranks work?

A: J = 11, Q = 12, K = 13, Ace = 1, all other are their face value
